When Peter turned away the homunculus touched the cheek of its mask. It had been ordered not to remove it, or to allow Billy to remove it, lest the shock startle him out of their control. They had said nothing about others. Though bound to the Echo's will the false Doll remained a creation of Billy's will and power. It was animated by his desires, not theirs. What parts of Billy remained free could find the loopholes in the cult's programing and through them maintain some small revolution.
Footsteps approached from the other end of the hallway, heading for Billy's room.
